These folks are frequent visitors on the elementary school circuit. Kids check 'em out.

Welcome to NYE Labs ON-LINE |
BedTime-Story |
Starts off with helpful story synopses, approximate reading times, and age-group ratings for each of its more than 30 stories. The site is neatly categorized into Stories About Kids and Their Pets; Whimsical, Magical, Adventurous, Humorous Stories; and Stories Worth Talking About. Some of the stories even have music and animation. Bedtime-Story invites submissions from writers and illustrators, professionals or beginners. There is plenty here to keep children and parents busy online (and off-line, too). |
The Realist Wonder Society | This labor of love bills itself as a 'whistle-stop of imagination between way stations of reality.' Here your older child will find romantic fairy tales, screenplays, illustrated books, artwork, and essays. The Film and Screenplays page lets you compare your favorite Disney and Grimm films with their fairy-tale sources. View the works of artists whose styles live in imagination, such as Chris Van Allsburg and Winsor McCay. |
Bambi, 101 Dalmatians, The Lion King, and six other Disney favorites are readable online at DISNEY BOOKS, and all have high-quality illustrations. Sounds and animations are available on separate pages but don't clutter up the main stories. Arrows and other pointers provide easily clickable targets for young mouse-users. Our only complaint: The high-res images can take time to load.
Did you know that Stephen King was only 13 when he wrote and sold his first story? Or that C.S. Lewis was eight or nine years old when he started his first novel? Deborah Morris, author of Real Kids, Real Adventures, uses these examples to inspire young readers to write on their own at the YOUNG WRITERS' CLUBHOUSE. She offers plenty of advice and inspiration, including a quarterly writing contest with cash prizes. Designed for kids 10 and older, the site features live chat, a bulletin board, and stories about young writers such as Mollie McDougall, a 15-year-old who has had more than 60 poems and stories published.
Candle Light Stories |
a good selection of stories. The tale of 'Rumpelstiltskin' is told without a click from you: A self-loading story line and animations do the work. Stories such as 'The Amazing Spectacular Ordinary Bottle' have superb illustrations, and all stories have intricate color illustrations. 'Sally on the Island' is a work-in-progress, so check back for future installments. Clickable pointing hands make navigation easy for kids. The only minus: The site is graphics-intensive, so be prepared for some long download times. |
The Sea Monkey Oz Home Page |
Kindergartners and elementary school students from Tempe, Arizona, have created their own CyberOz, complete with e-mail links to characters, beautiful drawings, and some hilarious writings and characters. |
Canadian site written by kids and for kids, encourages children from kindergarten to high school to read and to tell stories of their own. There is a large and entertaining database of book reviews written by children, and a Lonely Books Club of great titles that still need to be reviewed. Best of all is the interaction between the young literary minds, in forums -- such as the lively discussion of Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books. We also liked the "stickey notes" feature that allows kids to post quick public notes on books.
Animals, Myths and Legends |
Australian site where three cute, animated guides take youngsters through legends and myths that explore the origins of animal-world phenomena. Learn the story behind how kangaroos got their pouches or why coyotes are reputed to bring fire. It is a fascinating world that also includes coloring pages, word search games, and crossword puzzles to keep kids eight-13 busy for hours on rainy days. |
Cyber-Seuss |
a serious look at the works of Dr. Seuss, examining his brilliant wit and his moral messages to children, but it is also packed with sounds and artwork that kids will love to download, including The Cat in the Hat. It is a great place for parents to hang out after reading The Lorax for the 139th time. |
Children's Storybooks Online |
features more than a dozen stories, primarily for younger children ('The Farm Animals' and 'Buzzy Bee') but with a few for older kids, too ('Who Did Patrick's Homework?'). Some stories are on one long page, while others require an easy click to the next page. A small, colorful illustration gives you a good idea of what you are getting into before you read a particular story. |
Reading Rainbow |
The Web site of the award-winning PBS series READING RAINBOW isn't all that pretty, but there is a fair bit of useful info waiting under the covers, particularly for parents looking to buy or borrow books for the kids. Listen to LeVar Burton's RealAudio greeting, or jump straight to the reading lists and show guides, which include activities based on books such as Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses. Great for pre-schoolers and early readers, with parental guidance. |
Official Seussville Site |
After a trip through Cyber-Seuss, you may want to check out the official SEUSSVILLE site, where you can play a few cool games and order CD-ROMs and Whoville clothes online. We can have lots of good fun that is funny. |
Story Brook Lane |
a small selection of stories where the outcome is in your hands. In 'Christopher's Choices,' kids are faced with no-brainers such as 'Do you want to go to school or go to the arcade and play games?' (Don't worry, when kids avoid schoolwork, a moral is presented to teach them the error of their ways. ) |
THE THEODORE TUGBOAT ONLINE ACTIVITY CENTRE |
Asks you which direction the story should take: 'What do you think Theodore should do? Welcome the big ship, or visit Barrington Barge?' |
